- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- The problem with feed-forward, and the Cartesian feedback type amps
- is that it's very difficult to get them working over large
- bandwidths. While the percentage bandwidths involved in the
- VHF/UHF bands aren't so high, at HF it's obviously a totally
- different matter. As far as I know, nobody has applied these
- techniques to wideband HF transmitters.
-
- The envelope elimination and restoration technique is more
- appropriate here, and has been in use for many years in
- broadcast SSB transmission, for example. Here, the AF
- waveform high-level modulates a non-linear PA which is driven
- by a 'limited' (i.e. constant amplitude) carrier modulated
- with the appropriate phase information. The net result is ideally
- the original non-constant envelope waveform. In practice some
- distortion does occur - including AM/PM distortion and some
- feedthrough of the driving waveform, particularly when the
- supply voltage gets pulled down towards zero.
-
- Of course, if you just stick to CW .......

- Help!
-
- I am new to the world of ham radio, and want to get started. I am
- thinking of purchasing a handheld unit, and have just about fallen in
- love with the Alinco DJ-580T. It is a dual band 2M/440MHz unit.
-
- Before I go out and fork out $380 for this thing I want to know a few things:
- Is Alinco any good? Is there anything the Alinco does not have that I
- might miss if I start using Ham radio frequently? The Alinco comes with
- 40 memory channels total for both bands. Is that enough? Should I go up
- $80 more and buy a Kenwood radio instead with more memory channels?
-
- Anyone out there currently using the Alinco DJ-580T? I'm thinking of
- making a purchase in the next few days, so prompt replies will be
- appreciated.
-
- Thank you.

- Sandy, my mother lives in a tiny town called Minden, Nevada. Their

-
- Sheesh yourself. My elmer had stacks of QST's lying around his garage.
- As a young pup I practically memorized them cover-to-cover. Those mags
- along with his encouragement made me a ham.

- Phooey.

- I disagree with your timing. I bought my combo "cube" (not really the
- same shape as the Kubes, it's rather flat) no more than two years ago, on
- closeout sale at RS, and I'm reasonably sure this store wouldn't have had
- anything 15 years old to sell. :-)
